Who doesn’t love a simple crochet project using worsted weight yarn? It’s the easiest, it’s the best. Make it chevrons to snazz it up a little, and you’ve got yourself a timeless crochet piece to enjoy or gift.
I feel like if I’m not using green yarn, I’m using some kind of orangey pink. That coral color is Lion Brand Pound of Love in Pink Salt, and I’ve been dying to make something with it. That being said, any worsted weight yarn will do!
If you’re not familiar with the chevron stitch, don’t fret. Chevrons are made by crocheting 3 stitches in one to make a peak, and skipping 2 stitches to make a valley. This blanket only has three peaks, as I wanted to make the pattern oversized and bold. (If you know me, you know I love an oversized oversimplified motif, just see the Holiday Hygge Throw and the Rustic Tartan series!)

You can make this blanket in any color combination to fit any nursery, personality, or style. This is one of my favorite things about making baby blankets! The sample I made uses Lion Brand Pound of Love in Pastel Pink (color 1), Quartz (color 2), Pink Salt (color 3), and Antique White (color 4). I think this blanket does well with colors that are related, or different shades of the same color. I can’t wait to see what color combos you come up with!

Materials
- Approximately 1360 yards of worsted weight yarn (340 yards of each color)
- Size 5mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Size
Approximately 36 x 43 inches
Gauge
14 hdc st x 10 rows per 4×4 inches
Abbreviations
This pattern uses US abbreviations
- ch = chain
- hdc = half double crochet
- hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 together (decrease stitch)
- st = stitch
- C1 = Color 1
- C2 = Color 2
- C3 = Color 3
- C4 = Color 4
Notes
When written “hdc 28,” this means make 28 consecutive hdc stitches. When written “3 hdc,” this means make 3 hdc stitches into the same stitch.
Since this is a chevron pattern, the gauge does not directly relate the final size of the blanket. When checking your gauge, I suggest making a rectangle instead of following the chevron pattern. This will tell you if you need to adjust your hook size. That being said, gauge is not super important for blankets, so don’t stress!
Written Pattern
Ch 173 in C1.
Row 1: Hdc into the 2nd ch from hook. Hdc 27, 3 hdc, *hdc 28, sk 2 st, hdc 28, 3 hdc.* Repeat *. Hdc 28. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2: Hdc2tog, hdc 27, 3 hdc, *hdc 28, sk 2 st, hdc 28, 3 hdc.* Repeat *. Hdc 27, hdc2tog over last 2 st. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 3-12: Repeat Row 2.
Rows 13-24: In C2, repeat Row 2.
Row 25-36: In C3, repeat Row 2.
Row 37-48: In C4, repeat Row 2.
Now you will repeat all rows so far using the colors indicated in each section.
Rows 49-60: Repeat Rows 1-12 (C1).
Rows 61-72: Repeat Rows 13-24 (C2).
Rows 73-84: Repeat Rows 25-36 (C3).
Rows 85-96: Repeat Rows 37-48 (C4).
Pull through last st and cut. Weave in ends.
Pro tip: run the blanket through the dryer (whether you wash it first or not) to soften up the yarn. Especially if you are using budget worsted yarn, which can be a little stiff at first. A quick toss in the dryer on low heat will make it a very cozy situation. And I hope this baby blanket’s new owner has many, many hours of cozy with it.
