Hi, friends! I feel like it’s been a while since I put out a new design, but I’ve been dreaming this one up for a while now.
My friend sent me a gorgeous large-print buffalo plaid scarf/cape for Christmas, and I am absolutely in love with its timeless elegance. I love classic motifs, and I love oversimplified ones best. This was kind of the best of both!
I started experimenting with a hat, but took a break and ended up knocking out these fingerless gloves first. I have plans for a matching set though, so keep your eye out! Update: you can find the matching cowl pattern here!
I had just finished working on my Holiday Hygge blanket, and I loved working with Lion Brand Wool Ease. I knew the cream and grey colors I had used would be perfect for the buffalo check I was going for!
I had to pick up some black yarn, but technically I’m calling this a stash busting win since 2 out of the 3 skeins were from my stash 😉
These wrist warmers use intarsia for color changes. I tried carrying the yarn, but I just can’t deal with the loss of stretch it causes, especially for a wearable item like gloves.
For a photo tutorial on how to use intarsia for color changes, click HERE.
You will be using bobbins for this, but since it’s such a small project, the bobbins aren’t bulky or difficult. It’s SO WORTH IT to not carry the yarn for this one. Just trust me!
And yes the ribbing is in black. Sorry not sorry. Don’t worry you’re gonna love it.
The gloves are constructed flat, and then seamed together on the sides. I much preferred this to working in the round on something so small (these are tiny to me, I usually make blankets!). All you amigurimi folks amaze me.
Mod Buffalo Plaid Fingerless Gloves
MATERIALS
NOTE: The sample uses Lion Brand Wool Ease in Black, Fisherman, & Oxford Grey. Wool Ease is a category 4 yarn, however it is on the thinner side. If you are using a different worsted weight yarn, be sure to check gauge to ensure proper fit and sizing.
- 60 yards of worsted weight yarn in Black (B)
- 12 yards of worsted weight yarn in White (W)
- 30 yards of worsted weight yarn in Grey (G)
- 4 mm hook (or larger/smaller for larger/smaller size gloves)
- Yarn bobbins, if desired (you can also use simple wooden clothes pins)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle (these bent tip ones are my favorite)

ABBREVIATIONS
W = White
B = Black
G = Grey
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
blo = back loop only
hdc = half double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
GAUGE
18 sts x 16 rows per 4×4 inch square
SIZE
Height: 7 in
Width 3.5 in (4.5 in at thumb hole, 2.5 in at bottom band)
NOTE: Size is measured on finished item laying flat. This measurement does not account for stretch.
SIZING
To adjust the size of your glove, you have two options:
Option 1: Use a larger or smaller hook to make the glove larger or smaller, respectively. This will work best for slight variations less than 3/4 inch.
Option 2: To make the glove more than 3/4 inch larger (or smaller), you can add (or remove) one stitch to each of the 6 horizontal color blocks. This will make the glove approx 3/4 inch wider (or smaller). From there you can size up or down your hook size as in Option 1 for more precise sizing adjustments.
NOTES:
This pattern uses a turning chain of ch 1. This ch 1 does NOT count as the first stitch of the next row.
Read the pattern as follows: “Hdc 4 B” means “half double crochet 4 in Black.”

Top band:
Note: To make the top band, you will be using a join-as-you-go method of attaching ribbing. You can find an excellent tutorial on this from TL Yarn Crafts on YouTube.
Ch 4.
Row 1: Sc into 2nd ch from hook. Sc 2. Sl st into top of 2nd to last st of the last row. Sl st into the next st from the last row. Turn.
Row 2: Sc blo across (3 st). Ch 1 & turn.
Row 3. Sc blo across. Sl st into next st from the body of the glove. Sl st into the next st. Turn.
Repeat Rows 2-3 until you have 32 rows (all the way across the top of the glove).
Do not finish off.
Seaming:
Cut your yarn with a ~10 inch tail. Pull through your last stitch.
Using a tapestry needle, seam the edges of the glove together. Be sure to turn your glove inside out before seaming. This means that you will have your “wrong side” up during seaming.
Weave in your loose ends.
Second Glove:
There is no structural difference between the right and left glove, so just repeat the whole process for your second glove.
I hope you love your gloves!
