Crochet for a Cause
Ashley of Edyth Blayne hosted an amazing initiative this summer called Crochet for a Cause. She gathered a bunch of fabulous designers to coordinate a free PDF download for a hat or scarf pattern to be released each week. The idea behind her initiative is to collect patterns that can be quickly/easily made to be donated. I was honored to be able to participate with this chunky crochet cowl!
The Design
I actually made this cowl back in 2014 when I was deployed. I wear this thing all winter long, and I’m so happy to be able to share it. I had to spend more time reverse engineering it than I’d like to admit, ha! But I was finally able to replicate it.

This chunky cowl is snug-fitting, designed to keep you warm all the way up to your face. The longer you make it, the more it will cover your collarbone, but that’s not where the wow factor is for this one in particular 🙂
I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick for the original, and Lion Brand Hometown USA for my reengineering efforts. The gauge of these two yarns (though both super bulky #6) is slightly different, but luckily small variations in gauge don’t make a huge difference in this design! Any super bulky yarn will do the trick.
Sizing
I REALLY wanted to make this pattern easy to make multiples of. Using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (6 oz per skein), you can make a whole cowl with just one skein! PRAISE. I love one-skein wonders.
Using Lion Brand Hometown USA (4 oz per skein), it’s takes between 1.5-1.75 skeins to make the finished piece.
The really good news is that this pattern is a simple row-by-row repeat, and you can make it however long or short your heart desires!
I hope you enjoy it! It’s quick to make up – believe me, as I made at least one every morning for a week trying to figure out what the heck I did LOL. It’s the perfect quick gift, and easy to put on repeat for market prep!
Chunky Ridge Cowl Pattern
Materials
- ~100 yards of super bulky category 6 yarn
- Size 10 mm crochet hook (or whatever size gets you closest to gauge)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations
– This pattern is written in US terms.
- ch = chain
- hdc = half double crochet
- blo = back loop only
- st = stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
Gauge
7 st x 5 rows per 4×4 inch square
Size
11.5″ x 12.5”
Pattern
This cowl is crocheted in modified joined rounds. You will turn your work after joining.
Foundation chain: Ch 38. Being careful not to twist the chain, sl st into first ch.
NOTE: this pattern is easily adjustable. You can chain more or less in any amount if you desire a wider/narrower width.
Row 1: Ch 2. Hdc into next st. Hdc around. Sl st into ch 2 from the beginning of the row. (37 + ch2). Ch 2 and turn.
Row 2: Hdc blo around. Sl st into ch 2 from beginning of round. Ch 2 and turn.
Repeat Row 2 until you reach 16 rows.
After the last sl st, ch 1 and pull through. Cut and tie off. Weave in ends.
