This advanced beginner crochet herringbone blanket features an oversized motif made using eyelets. It’s solid color makes a bold statement and lets the eyelet details shine, and it makes a perfect lapghan or baby blanket.

Inspiration
I’ve been loving eyelets ever since I designed one of my all-time faves – the Diamonds & Dots baby blanket. I love how it’s a subtle way to add details, and I love that those details involve no color changes or complex stitches!
I’ve also been loving oversized motifs (like the Rustic Tartan Throw and the Holiday Hygge Throw), and I’d been wanting to incorporate eyelets into that idea for a while.
Enter: herringbone. The perfect timeless pattern to modernize ever so slightly with large scaling.
I had what I knew was the perfect color in my stash. I had gotten a huge skein of green yarn at a department store in Germany during my time there. It was a bold yellow-green with some great texture. I estimated the yardage I’d need and got to work.
To my dismay, I was only able to finish about 80% of the blanket with that yarn >super sad face< . But I found a *pretty* good match in Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Olive. It wasn’t a perfect solution, but I love the color and weight of the yarn. If I made another, I’d likely make it all in Vanna’s Choice!
Details
You only need to know one stitch – double crochet – and how to chain and skip stitches. Currently it comes in one size, which is lapghan/crib size. (Crib size is a slightly larger baby blanket designed to cover a crib sized mattress.)
The bold but subtle oversized herringbone design creates a very modern decor element. Would look amazing in a rich color or peaceful neutral. A great add to a boho nursery with gender neutral design, or as part of a modern farmhouse or transitional living space.
