Has it snowed yet where you are? We had the smallest of flurries last week, but I can’t wait to get some real snow!
I’ve been trying to up my DIY game this holiday season. While I ventured outside of crochet for this, it still gave me my yarn fix.
I saw what looked like snow dusted pom poms in a flyer a few months ago, and I decided I HAD to figure out how to make them. I instantly could visualize them in green and thought of this photo I took outside our old house in Germany:
You could make this with any color you want, but using green invokes wintry evergreen vibes, and paired with the interspersed white you get a full snowy Christmas tree effect.
I was able to use up some of my stash yarn for this project. It’s a perfect stash buster. You know I’m a [huge] fan of the color green, so I had quite a few shades in my stash to work with 😉 I actually used two different shades of green to give the garland some dimension.
I paired it with some years-old who-knows-what acrylic white yarn for the “snow” element. I’m sure you have some of that!
I used Clover’s large pom pom maker tool. Personally I’m not great at making perfectly puffy poms without it, but you can follow the same method below using a cardboard template!
4.5′ Snow Dusted Pom Pom Garland
What you’ll need:
- 1 skein of green yarn (or choose your own base color!)
- Less than 1 skein of white yarn
- 4.5′ twine or cotton rope/yarn
- Sharp fabric scissors
- 2.5 inch pom pom maker or template

Pom Pom Instructions:
- Start with your green yarn. Wrap the yarn around the first side of your pom pom maker once.
- Using white yarn, wrap the yarn interspersed over the green (around 15-20 times). A random spacing will create more of an authentic snowy look. Resist the urge to make it all evenly spaced!
- Wrap another layer of green yarn over the white layer.
- Repeat steps 2 & 3 until you achieve the desired thickness. I repeated it 2 times to create a nice full pom pom 2.5″ inches in diameter. Then secure and cut the yarn.
- Repeat on the second side of the tool, secure the yarn and cut.
- Cut the yarn along the edges.
- Cut a 6-8″ piece of yarn from the green yarn. Insert it into the grooves in the tool and tie tightly around the center (at least double knot).
- Remove pom pom from the tool.
- Fluff and trim to create evenness.
- Repeat to make 7 pom poms.
Garland Instructions:
- Cut a 4.5 foot piece of twine or cotton string/yarn (or however long you would like!)
- Using the tails from your pom pom, attach the pom poms every 6-7 inches to the string. Use at least a double knot.
- Cut the tails so they are the same length as the rest of your pom pom.
- Tie a slip knot on each end of the twine for hanging.
- Hang on your mantle or shelf to create instant festive vibes!
