In the past two years I’ve had two babies. They’re great. Love them. They cry a lot, but they’re so squishy and tiny and we just love them. You become okay with the extra fluff you carry around and with maybe not showering every day. Because they’re just so great.
And then when they’re about 4 months old, all your hair falls out.
And then you’re like GREAT THIS IS JUST WHAT I NEEDED RIGHT NOW.
But don’t worry, I can help. Google can help you too but since you’re here I’ll just tell you: lavender, cedarwood and rosemary essential oils. And some witch hazel. Boom.
These three essential oils are nourishing and can promote hair health and, ultimately, allow it to grow. Let me be up front with you: this magical concoction will not stop you from losing your hair. Unfortunately God decided that this rite of passage of losing all your hair after you have a baby is a necessity. And we trust alllllll the details right? Ugh. So your hair will fall out. But the magical concoction will help those hairs grow back quicker, healthier and stronger. When I got my hair cut around 7 months post-partum my hair dresser told me my baby hairs were growing in nicely and I count that as a professional opinion and compliment!
Here’s what to do:
- Take a 4 oz spray or mister bottle like these ones
- Add 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
- Add 10 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil
- Add 10 Drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
- OPTIONAL: Add 2-5 drops of Ylang Ylang or Geranium Essential Oil to make it smell nicer (it’s the Rosemary that ruins it)
- Fill the rest of the bottle with witch hazel. My favorite one to use for this is Thayer’s Witch Hazel with Rose Petal
That’s it! Shake it up before you use it and spray on your scalp. For post-partum woes I focus on my receding hairline, but you can spray it all over. I also do this before I go to bed and give it a little massage after.
For that pesky (read: WHY DOES THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN) receding hairline, you can also use castor oil. Castor oil has been used to regrow hair since the dawn of time. There are so many treatments out there for balding, I was shocked to find out how well castor oil works for regrowing hair. Why doesn’t everyone try this before giving up or getting some crazy chemical treatment!? Castor oil is sticky – like super sticky – so if you’re going to use this I suggest you use it before you go to bed. If you shower at night (i.e. you’re not going to shower in the morning to wash it out), try applying it a few hours before you shower in the evening. It needs to absorb, so you don’t want to wash it out right away. But you WILL need to wash it out. Sticky. You can also mix it with a thinner oil like jojoba oil to dilute it and make it less sticky. I like Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

What is the purpose for Witch Hazel?
Hi! It’s to distribute the EOs so that you only spray/apply a small amount of them at a time.
Hi there, does this leave your hair greasy ? Does it need to be washed out in the morning ?
It will make it greasy if you use a lot. I do 3-4 sprays and I’m okay. I shower at night so I do it after I shower and do not wash out.
Is there any other oil to thin the Castor oil besides Jojoba oil?
Hi! Yes you can use many different oils. Anything thinner will help – from basic olive oil to finer argan oil.
What is the ratio of castor oil and jojoba if using instead of witch hazel? Or do you use all three (witch hazel, castor and jojoba)?
Hi! I used them separately. The witch hazel is used to disperse the essential oils in the spray bottle, and the castor oil you can massage directly on your scalp to encourage regrowth. Since castor oil is so thick and sticky, I often dilute mine with a thinner oil (like jojoba). As for the ratio, if I’m doing more of a “mask” (apply generously, leave on for an hour or two, then wash out in the shower) I will only dilute it a little. If you are using a small amount daily, I would start with a 50/50 ratio, see how it absorbs into your scalp (so it doesn’t look greasy) and adjust from there. Hope that helps!
Will an Aluminum spray bottle work?
Hi! Yes that would work. The main thing is that it’s something that wont eventually wear down and seep into your mixture.
Does it have to be young living brand for the essential oils?
Nope! Just make sure you’re using quality oils from a company you trust.
How Many ml is the spray bottle ?
Hi! I used a 4oz bottle, which is about 110 mL
Can you replace witch hazel with castor oil for better results? Do you use it as a spray? With oils and fillings what is missing with oil beaver or is it very sticky?
Hi Maria! Personally I wouldn’t replace with castor oil as it is very sticky and probably wouldn’t spray well.
